4 Secrets to Walking Off Weight

Smart moves that keep the scale going in the right direction

By RealAge Page 1 of 1

1. Use your shoes to curb a craving. When all you can think of is chocolate, or you're salivating over the thought of a salty snack, get up and take a walk (but not to the convenience store!). Chocoholics experience a major dip in cravings just 15 minutes after a walk, unlike people who don't get up and move around.

2. Start small. Shorter walks could be all you need to do to lose weight during your first 3 months of walking. In a 12-week study of significantly overweight women, those who walked for 30 minutes, 5 days a week, lost weight at a rate similar to women who walked twice as long -- 60 minutes, 5 days a week.

3. Get speedy every now and then. Alternate your regular walking pace with intense 1- to 3-minute intervals -- "intense" meaning conversation is tricky but not so hard that you want to stop talking altogether. Then, dial back to your regular pace for a minute or more to recover. Repeat as often as you can for as long as you want. "This isn't an exact science, so don't worry about a magic formula," says Gregory Florez, an American Council on Exercise spokesperson in Salt Lake City. "Play around with it. Walk fast toward the next stop sign, then slow down, repeat. However you do it, varying your intensity and exertion will dramatically increase the calorie burn during your walks."

4. Other times, don't worry about speed. If you just can't go any faster, Florez recommends these other tools for boosting fat loss:

Frequency: When you think you're not losing, add another session of walking to your week.

Intensity: When you've done that, add some hills to make your walk a little harder. You want to be between 12 and 15 on the Borg Perceived Exertion Scale (0 on the scale is sleeping, and 20 is a full-out sprint where you are panting and feel ready to faint). "You should be able to carry on a conversation, but every other sentence you should have to take a deep breath."

walking is the most user-friendly form of exercise there is. But your everyday walking speed matters, too. Especially if you're trying to live a longer life.

Here's why: New research suggests that if your everyday walking speed is more than just a casual stroll, you'll live longer than your pokier peers.

To reap longevity rewards and live longer than expected, people's everyday walking speed needed to be at least 2.25 miles per hour. That's a little over 3 feet every second. People with this gait speed typically outlived the slower-striding folks in the study. (Walking this much can slash your risk of a stroke.)

How Walks Talk

Of course, a real walking workout now and then, where you get your heart rate up and sweat a little, is great for your long-term health, too. But the everyday speed at which you get around could be an important sign of how healthy you are. A person's walking ability can be a window into the health and function of a number of systems in the body because it requires a coordinated effort between your heart, lungs, skeletal muscles, and brain. So if you walk well -- and often -- it can become a powerful tool in your quest to live a longer life. (Too cold to go out and walk? Try this walking workout you can do in your own living room.)

you should be eating: beans and whole grains. Giảm béo bụng

Is your problem spot that area right around your belt buckle? Well then, here are two kinds of healthy carbs you should be eating: beans and whole grains.

In a study, obese men and women who were put on a heart-healthy diet lost more belly fat when their daily meals emphasized these two foods rather than refined grains.

Bellies and Beans

In the 18-month study, all participants ended up losing about the same amount of weight. But the people eating diets rich in beans and whole grains enjoyed especially good results around their middles. And all that was required for extra middle melting was eating whole grains instead of refined and replacing two daily grain servings with a couple of servings of beans -- like lentils, chickpeas, or kidney beans. These changes created a low-glycemic-index diet that was satisfying, blood-sugar-balancing, and belly-fat blasting. (Find out how a low-glycemic-index diet helps your eyes, too.)

How Good Carbs Help

Other research has linked higher bean consumption with less belly fat, probably because beans -- like whole grains -- are made of good, less energy-dense carbs that are higher in fiber and take longer to digest, keeping you satisfied longer. Here are a few other strategies you can adopt to help drop more belly fat:

Cheer up. Find out how blue-mood hormones could sabotage your waistline.

Make all the right moves. Here is some expert exercise advice on how to target a spare tire.

Get more antioxidants. Onions and other antioxidant-rich foods may help slow weight gain around your middle.

Secrets of Longevity

Foods that Promote Happiness

If you’re feeling as blue as the skies above, you will be happy to know that a few spoonfuls of the right foods may turn that frown upside down! Whole foods contain vital nutrients that provide both physical and psychological benefits. Read on to discover which foods contain those mood-boosters to help you smile your way to longevity.

Fun with Folate

Eat folate-rich foods: Leafy greens like kale, broccoli, spinach, asparagus, turnip greens, bok choy, legumes, sunflower seeds, oranges, melons, beets, and fortified whole grains

Why? Folate, also know as folic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that is necessary for cell division, DNA synthesis, and healthy blood cell production. Research at the University of York and Hull York Medical School has found a link between depression and low levels of folate. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for men and women is 400 micrograms and 600 micrograms for pregnant women. To keep you smiling, increase your intake of folate-rich foods. A cup of cooked lentils provides 90% of the RDA of folic acid. Plus, the fiber and protein will satisfy you longer, stabilize blood sugar, and also promote a better mood. Additional bonuses: Folate can also decrease homocysteine, an amino acid that is linked to heart disease. Low levels of folate can cause anemia, while pregnant women must increase their folate levels to prevent fetal neural tube deficiencies.

Boost Your B6

Eat B6 foods: bananas, chicken breast, garlic, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, sunflower seeds, broccoli, red bell peppers, watermelon, avocados, and potatoes

Why? Vitamin B6 plays a role in red blood cell metabolism, protein metabolism, and synthesis of neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. It also helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels, and increases the amount of oxygen carried to your tissues. Low levels can lead to an increase of homocysteine, anemia, headaches, and depression. The RDA for adults from age 19 to 50 is 1.3 mg/day and approximately 1.6 mg for individuals over 50. The next time you’re feeling down, grab a banana and munch your blues away!

Go Fish!

Eat omega-3-rich foods: fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, anchovies, and herring, flaxseeds, walnuts, and algae

Why? DHA omega-3 essential fatty acid maintains healthy brain function and is vital for fetal brain and eye development. Current research also demonstrates the association between intake of omega-3 fatty acids and depression. A meta-analysis study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found that depression was significantly improved in patients with unipolar and bipolar disorders after taking three daily fish capsules for eight weeks. Eat the oily fish listed above -- a 3-ounce serving of salmon contains between 1.1 - 1.9 grams of omega-3 fatty acids. Supplementing with high quality fish oil capsules may be an alternative if you don’t consume fish on a regular basis. Vegetarian sources of omega-3 can be found in flaxseeds, walnuts, and algae. Toss a tablespoon of sunflower seeds or walnuts into a creamy cup of unsweetened low-fat yogurt for a mega mood boost!

Good Carbs, Bad Carbs

Eat good carbs: whole grains, fruits, vegetables

Why? Not all carbohydrates are created equal. Whole grains, fruits, and veggies supply us with prolonged energy, fiber, and multiple nutrients that our bodies need for optimal health. Good quality carbohydrates can also trigger serotonin synthesis. Recognized as the “happy hormone,” serotonin is an important neurotransmitter that affects our mood and sleep. The next time you feel blue, instead of reaching for that bag of chips or sugary cookies, opt for unrefined, unprocessed carbohydrates that will provide you with sustained energy and an improved mood. Toss that muffin and enjoy a whole grain cracker with a tablespoon of natural nut butter for a delicious and uplifting snack!

Search High blood sugar can damage certain body parts, just like dirty oil can muck up a car's engine. But there might be a novel way to prevent some of that blood sugar badness.

Eat purple sweet potatoes. Dark fruits and veggies, like purple sweet potatoes, are loaded with anthocyanins. And lab studies show that these potent antioxidant compounds interfere with cell-damaging processes that are triggered by high blood sugar.

Anthocyanins: Armor for Your Heart

Here's how it all works: Chronically high blood sugar can cause proteins to bind with sugar molecules in the body. Which is the first step in a long chain of reactions that eventually leads to compounds called advanced glycation end products (AGEs). And AGEs have been implicated as part-culprits in a host of conditions, from diabetes to heart disease. But in a recent lab study, anthocyanin extracts from purple sweet potatoes put the brakes on this glycation process, slowing it down over 50 percent. Which led researchers to suspect that these tubers could be beneficial in mitigating high blood sugar damage. (Include these blood-sugar-curbing edibles in your diet, too.)

Colorful Protection

So what about yellow sweet potatoes? Not nearly as powerful. They only inhibited these harmful protein glycations a mere 7 percent. Of course, study in humans is needed to confirm whether eating purple sweet potatoes will confer any measurable benefit to people with blood sugar problems. But plenty of other research suggests that anthocyanins from darkly colored foods help slow down the aging process and help protect the body from things like cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and cancer. (Here's more on the power of colorful fruits and veggies to protect against disease.)

Did you know? The antioxidants in tomatoes get even stronger if you cook them.
